Trivia at Strawberry Hills Hotel

Wednesday 30th November 2013 at 7:30pm

The Strawberry Hills Hotel according to their website believe hat they have ran their Wednesday trivia night for 12 years.  I guess all the alchol fumes eventually take an effect as in before 2012 it ran on Tuesdays.  Irrespective of this, it is a stalwart of the trivia scene and has a large number of regulars to go with this.  Trivia starts at 7:30pm.

The Walking Dead Board Game at The Nerd Cave

Sunday 20th October 2013 at 8pm

The Nerd Cave has upgraded their boardgame stock to now include The Walking Dead Board Game, which is based on the comic book series rather than the television show.  As per the gamemakers description, the objective of the game is to 'with only one companion at the start of the game, each player must struggle together resources, find other survivors and eventually find a refuge'.  At the start of the game, each player selects between 6 characters (Rick, Andrea, Dale, Glenn, Shane and Tyreese) each of which has a different special ability.  In addition to the six main characters, there is an additional 23 potential followers, each which also has a special ability, you start with one of these and as you progress around the game board you may come across more who will also follow you.

Each turn, each player moves up to three places in any direction on the game board, from which they may collect three types of resources, ammunition, gas or food.  Each time a player lands on a game board tile with this resource present, they then draw an encounter card.  An encounter card will involve performing some sort of challenge, which most commonly involve either fighting a zombie attack, rolling a specific dice roll or using up a specific type of resource.  The benefits of an encounter card include the acquisition of additional followers, extra resources, inventory items and the opportunity to improve the health of your current survivors.  Each time a board tile is passed through by one of the six players, this tile then becomes a zombie tile, which if landed on again by a player will immediately involve flipping this tile to see how many zombies will then have to be fought.

The zombie attack is played out with dice, with one being rolled by each survivor (main character and any followers present).  These dice have different potential rolls of which some directly kill a certain number of zombies present.  There is three different colour dices present; the blue (representing heroic attributes), the red (representing fighter aspects) and the green (representing scavenger aspects).  Each character may have one or more of each type of dice to roll per attack.  For example, Shane rolls one blue and two reds per attack, whilst Carl rolls a single red.  All the dice listed on each of the characters and followers cards within a group are rolled at the same time, and then the results are used to fight off the zombie attack (if possible).  If a zombie is not killed, then this attacks the character who then takes a fatigue token of which each character can take a maximum of three prior to dying.

Setting Up a New Game

  1. Each player receives a resource sheet which is used to record resources held, write a 1 beside each resource type to represent the single piece of resource each player starts with.
  2. Randomly draw a character card for each player involved.
  3. Randomly draw a follower card for each character.
  4. Place the character on the allotted space related to that character on the gameboard and follow any steps (eg. extra resources) listed on the followers card.
  5. Three locations cards are drawn for everyone and placed on the gameboard, and an additional one location card is drawn by each player and kept secretly as this is a location of a safehaven that only there character is able to get to.
  6. The dice pool is determined for each character and his follower, the corresponding dice roll is then rolled by each player with the person who has rolled the most action going first. Play then continues clockwise.
Turn Order
  1. Use food to remove any fatigue from your characters.
  2. Move up to three places in any direction, placing a zombie token in each spot that is moved through.
  3. If you move onto a zombie token spot, movement is paused whilst a zombie attack occurs.  Once this has been resolved, you may continue moving afterwards.
  4. Once either a location or a resource tile has been landed on, movement is then ceased for the turn and an encounter card is drawn for each resource or alternativately the location scouting instructions are followed for that location.

Dinner at The Workers

Wednesday 22nd October 2013 at 6:30pm

Another long lonely night on stage for Nic
An absence of anyone ever in the Unity Hall Hotel, makes me suspect that they are all hiding away upstairs in the pub's sisters bar, The Workers.  This is the bar which supplies the questionable sliders and burgers for the downstairs bar, but I am assuming that all the best stuff is kept for their own customers upstairs and consequently am willing to give their $3 tacos on Wednesday night a chance.  The tacos are normally $5.50 and depressingly we missed out on seeing our favourite comedian Nic Cappa who was playing there the other week.  The tacos on offer are the following;

  • - Nemo Gonzales (battered Blue Eye, slaw, salsa pico de gallo and baja sauce)
  • - Soft Shell Coq (grilled chicken, slaw, salsa guacamole and chipotle mayo)
  • - Shrimp on the barbie (grilled marinated prawns, slaw, mojo verde and scallions)
  • - Pulled Porky Pig (slow cooked pork shoulder, red slaw, pico de piña asado and coriander)

Irrespective of the stupid names, they look pretty decent for $3 as in you receive three prawns in the shrimp on the barbie one.

Trivia at Unity Hall Hotel

Tuesday 23rd October 2013 at 7:30pm

File:Unity Hall Hotel Balmain 1.JPGClearly this trivia has the highest probability of winning a prize in Sydney, as with prizes for the top three places and average attendance being around five teams, you are as close to guaranteed winning something as you could possibly get.  The prizes are also nothing to sneeze at either, with $100 for the winner, $50 for second place and a fine $5 bottle of wine for those coming in third.  They also have a free drink for the true or false section, if the temporary lady hosting it is able to find the questions this week.

The previously dominate Black Caviar is sadly struggling in recent weeks, due to we suspect the tragic passing of their intelligent players. The remaining members it would appear are merely coming for the free sliders as budget cuts at their nursing home has meant that this is their cafeteria on Wednesday night.

Pink Lemonade in comparison have found a new lease of life with the addition of a trivia genius who is playing the long game in picking up girls through accruing an endless supply of bar tab winnings, which they proudly display on their table to intimidate us lesser rivals. Those arrogant prats! We are hoping that in the near future after his attempts to get them drunk on these winnings and back in his bed, it will become much too awkward for any of them to return.  Alternatively hopefully someone else in the pub may choose to shoot him as he argues with the host over the grammatical errors within her questions.

It is unclear as to whom the host will be this week, whether we shall see the return of Brett "Guitar" Murphy or we shall continue with our lovely female host, but it is important to get there this week as given the attendance numbers I do not believe it will be continuing for too much longer.  I book in first sip on our wine if we are successful in winning it once again.

Anthony Mundine vs Sugar Shane Mosley at Unity Hall Hotel

Wednesday 23rd October 2013 at 9:30pm

Anthony Mundine finally takes on an opponent that is one of the greats.  Sadly it was 10 years too late, as Shane Mosley is only a shell of his former self, to the point that many in the US believe that he should be banned from continuing to fight.  Don't worry though, this fight is in Australia so all is good, and I am sure Danny Green will be willing and able to fight him in his next fight over in Perth.

Mosley_Mundine_929x365_BANNERSugar Shane Mosley went undefeated for eight years at the start of his career, dominating the lightweight and welterweight divisions, including his famous victory over Oscar De La Hoya at his prime.  His first loss came against the enigmatic Vernon Forrest, who went on to beat him a second time in the rematch immediately after.  He followed this with his second victory over Oscar De La Hoya, however the two losses in a row soon after against Winky Wight appeared to take the heart out of Sugar Shane Mosley, and even though he was successful in beating Fernando Vargas twice and Antonio Margarito once, he clearly was not the fighter that made many believe that he could have been the greatest ever.  Since those fights he has been a name for fighters to either pump up the resume with or sell a warm up fight to the pay per view masses.  His most recent fight was a victory over a little known Mexican but prior to this he had three losses, all to fellow greats of the sport in the form of Saul Alvarez, Manny Pacquaio and Floyd Mayweather.  As much as Anthony Mundine may see this as a easy method by which to gain a small amount of attention in the US, he clearly is not in the same class as those that Shane Mosley has lost to and this will not be an easy fight for him.

Through the assistance of a bit of money, Anthony Mundine has been able to weasel a wbc international light middleweight belt to fight for.  Not the main wbc light middleweight belt which is held by Floyd Mayweather, this is essentially an interim belt but does give Mundine some chance at being a warm up fight for Mayweather in the event that he wins this.  Shane Mosley will be seeing this as a nice payday and an easy victory over an over-hyped opponent.

File:Unity Hall Hotel Balmain 1.JPG
Expect either a mid round demolition by Shane Mosley or a ten round avoidance by Anthony Mundine using his superior speed leading to a somewhat controversial victory.

We shall be tuning in at our trivia venue, the Unity Hall Hotel in Balmain which the Foxtel website hopefully reliably tells me is showing it.  If this is untrue, we should have ample time to make it to the nearby Monkey Bar or Balmain Hotel, as we would all know Mundine loves to drag out an undercard and the main event is unlikely to start until after 10:30pm.  The undercard has yet to be named, however due to Mundine's issues with just about every trainer in Australia it is unlikely to be anyone too notable, with the exception of Blake Ferguson's four round boxing debut.

The Shooting Academy (Auburn) Open Day

Saturday 26th October (10am - 4pm)

File:38 Special - FMJ - SB - 3.jpg
Time to get in touch with your inner Rambo and fire off some pistols at the Auburn Gun Club open day. The day runs from 10am to 4pm, but expect some queues so for those who wish to avoid this should aim to get in early.

The day is not free as you will have to pay for all the ammunition that you use, but is much cheaper than doing it at a paid shooting range with all staff present being volunteers.

Unlike other gun club open days as you are paying for the bullets, you are given the option of shooting a broader range of pistols as the costs for the more expensive bullets are covered by yourself.   The following options are going to present on the day;

    File:Ruger 22.jpg
  • .22 Ruger pistol, the ubiqutious gun club open day pistol due to the cheap cost of bullets. The gun club gives you two 10 bullet packages to choose from, that is reloaded bullets (bullets that have been fired and hand reloaded with new gunpowder etc) for $5 and factory bullets for $12 (bullets purchased from a factory and not previously fired).

    File:Pistol AUTO 9 mm 1A.jpg
  • 9mm pistol, which is the standard calibre of the US military.  Bullets are priced at $12 for reloads and $17 for factory.

    File:Smith & Wesson M&P.jpg
  • .38 Special, the standard US police force caliber into the 90s', consequently this will bring back all your cop show fantasies from childhood.  Bullets are priced at $12 for reloads and $17 for factory.

  • .357 magnum, is not the classic gun of Dirty Harry fame as that is a .44 magnum, however it is nevertheless iconic.  Bullets are priced at $12 for reloads and $17 for factory.

  • .357 Rifle, which is fitted with a lever action for reloading.  Bullets are as per the above .357 magnum.
The day requires a drivers license or passport as identification, a lack of a police record (in relation to violent crimes) and enclosed footwear.  As their flyer outlines there will also be refreshments available (http://www.shootingacademy.com/2013%20Open%20Day%20Flyer.pdf).

The address is as follows;

Trivia at Sir William Wallace Hotel

Monday 28th October 2013 at 6:30pm

William Wallace Hotel, Balmain, Sydney AustraliaOur most recent travails at our regular trivia venue have given sprout to a new theory on how we can eventually win, just once, at a trivia night.  The new theory essentially involves us locating the trivia venue that has the fewest teams playing, which based on my advanced mathematical knowledge developed within Maths in Society at school will increase our probability of victory.

Sir William Wallace Hotel is a tiny pub in backstreets of Birchgrove which I believe would be celebrating if they were able to get a handful of teams to their trivia nights.  I have no idea as to what the questions will consist of as it appears to be run independently of any of the big trivia firms and neither do I have an idea as to what the prizes for victory will be, however I doubt very much they can be any worse than the bargain bin wines we win elsewhere.  They also have a $12 angus rump steak on the specials menu for Monday nights to sweeten the deal.

Refer to this page for further details on the pub, food and racist murals.

Tennis at Summer Hill Courts

Tuesday 29th October 2013 at 5pm

Photo of Newly refurbished all Weather Tennis CourtsJust around the corner from Summer Hill Train Station is two recently refurbished free hard court tennis courts.  The queues for the courts tend to increase around 5:30pm as people head down just after they finish work, however prior to this the wait for the court is typically no longer than 15 minutes.   The lights on the courts stay on till around 9pm.  The court quality is as good as any paid tennis court with the surface having been recently refurbished, and by observing the courts post rain, where the absence of any water puddling implying they are also flat.

'Once Upon a Time in Anatolia' at the Art Gallery of NSW Theatre

Wednesday 30th October 2013

a view inside Domain TheatreThe Domain Theatre at the Art Gallery of NSW weekly screening is the film 'Once Upon a Time in Anatolia' starting at 7:15pm (this is the time the doors shut, so consequently it is safer to arrive earlier).  The Theatre seats approximately 150 people, and typically does not fill up for the weekly screenings.

Once Upon a Time in Anatolia is a Turkish film by one of that countries greatest directors which won the 2011 Cannes Grand Jury Prize. Outlined as being based on a true story, it tells the story of a group of Turkish men searching for a body in the aftermath of an earlier murder which occurred in a small Turkish town in the Anatolian steppes.  The writer/director himself lived in a small town such as this within his early directing career and consequently is able to tone of this part of Turkey.  The movie considers the elusiveness of the truth, through a meandering observation of the steps involved in locating the body through the assistance of the suspect of the murder.

Once Upon a Time in Anatolia.jpgThe Director Nuri Bilge Ceylan is a Cannes favourite having previously one the Grand Jury prize for his film 'Uzak'.  This movie is considered a slight change of direction from his previous urbane focused films as he now takes on a broader wilder environment of the steppes.

Considered to be one of the best films of the year of its release 2011, the film asks the audience to have empathy with the characters through the Director's masterful understanding of human nature.

The Domain Theatre is located on the very bottom floor of the Art Gallery of NSW.

Dinner at The Fish Shop

Wednesday 30th October 2013 at 9:45pm

The Fish Shop at Potts Point is part of the broader Merivale group, so consequently it is both a bar and a restaurant. This place has adopted the site of the previous Lotus restaurant and bar, down out of the heart of the Kings Cross strip.  It is better known for its food offerings than for its drinks, and is considered to make one of, if not the best burger in Sydney. At $19 it is on the pricier side of burgers however it the effort and technique involved in making it is far superior to the offerings at alternative places which are slightly cheaper. The bun is steamed, then a mixture of chuck, brisket and aged fat is made into a patty, then is added a mixture of bacon, cheese, onion, pickles, mayo and sauce. The burger has been inherited from the previous Lotus restaurant, with the remaining items on the menu predominately fish related.  Given the quality of the restaurant, the plain fish and chips at $19 is not bad value and the crumbed fish burger is also highly regarded.

Conquest of Nerath Boardgame at Nerd Cave

Sunday 3rd November 2013

One of the more intimidating games present within the Nerd Cave Board game pile is Conquest of Nerath, which is a Dungeon and Dragons produced game with the company supplied summary outlining 'Four great realms contend for domination of the known world.'  It furthers 'You fight battles to defend your lands or seize those of your foes and send brave heroes to uncover the ancient secrets buried in fearsome dungeons'. Four players are able to play and you assume the role of a warlord reigning over one of the four realms with each one having there only strengthens and weaknesses. The four realms are as follows;

  • Dark Empire of Karkoth - Warlocks and their undead army, who benefit from a strong starting position but have weak event cards
  • Vailin Alliance - Elves with prosperous trade routes and the strongest navy.
  • Iron Circle - Goblins, Wizards and mercenaries who have the strongest armies and the ability of surprise within their event cards.
  • Nerathan League - A combination of human and dwarf, who have the weakest territory but have the best event cards.
The ultimate aim of the game is to achieve the stated victory conditions which differ dependant on the length of the game that you select;

  • Short - 13 victory points at the end of game round, if tied, then the game continues for another round.
  • Medium - 20 victory points at the end of game round
  • Long - Control all capitals or collect 8 treasures
The Victory points are achieved through the completion of various tasks, with one for taking of an enemy territory, one to three for playing a treasure card and five for conquering an enemy capital.

There is two versions of play, that being with a set alliance at the start of the game where the players are then able to freely move through their allies territories or a free for all game where all players start alone and need to negotiate any possible alliances.  Within this second version, the ability to move through the land of an ally is not allowed.   The second version appears the most interesting as it provides the means for backstabbing and negotiation between opponents.

Players decide amongst themselves as to whom will receive which realm.  Each realm then has a set starting position on the map shown by a different colour; black (Karkoth), yellow (Vailin), red (iron circle) and Nerath (blue).  The sea spaces have no special colour even though a realm may have troops starting in them and the dungeon entrances are controlled by no one.  The board also has silhouettes on tiles of the game board to show where the starting pieces for each realm are positioned.

Pieces represent armies, with each figurine represent one troop and the chips that can be placed underneath representing five.  You are not limited in the number of troops that you may have by the presence of figurines or chips, as anything else can be used in lieu of these when the pieces run out.  The possible pieces in the game and there relative abilities are listed below;

  • Footsoldiers - Cheapest troops, plentiful but weak.
  • Siege Engines - Provide good cheap combat strength, slow but very powerful on offense
  • Monsters - Fast and hard hitting, can break through enemy lines to cause havoc.
  • Fighters - Move fast and fight well.  Can also explore dungeons and fight at sea.
  • Wizards - Can slay enemies before they have a chance to fight back.  Can explore dungeons and fight at sea.
  • Castles - Serve as gathering points for new troops and are strong on defense.
  • Storm Elementals - Control powerful gusts of wind, can move freely on land or sea.
  • Dragons - Most powerful and expensive pieces in the game, hard to kill, fly quickly and can attack on land or sea.
  • Warships - The backbone of your naval fleet, which transport troops and defend against enemy fleets.
Each realm has a set starting position, troops, base income, treasury, deck of twenty event cards and thirty treasure cards.  At the start of the game, players draw two event cards and draw an additional one each game turn.  The treasure cards are obtained through pillaging a dungeon.

The Dungeon guardian tiles are shuffled and distributed randomly facedown to the dungeon entrance on the game board.  The control markers are used to demonstrate that you have taken a territory that formally belonged to an opponent.  The base income of each team changes dependant on the number of territories that are controlled.  The game has a set order of realms, with the realms playing turn within the following order;
  1. Karkoth
  2. Vailin
  3. Iron Circle
  4. Nerath
The game turn sequence consists of the following steps;
  1. Draw - Drawing an event card, which will outline on it when it can be played.  With the exception of the cards which state play immediately, all other cards are up to the players discretion as to when he wishes to play them.  Once played, the card is added to a discard pile.  If the cards ever run out, then reshuffle the discard pile and continue.  There is no limit to the number of cards that can be held within your hand.
  2. Move - You can move as many pieces that you wish, up to the stated move number of each piece. A piece can move less than its stated move number or not move at all. There is no limit to the number of pieces that can occupy a space and as soon as a piece enters either an enemy territory or a dungeon entrance, the battle will need to be resolved in the next step.  Pieces can move from multiple locations to attack the single enemy territory. Sea spaces are only enemy territory if there is an enemy piece within them.  Only fighters and wizards can move into dungeon entrances.  Dragons and Elementals are able to fly over enemy spaces or dungeon entrances without stopping, when they stop they must fight the enemy if they finish in an enemy territory.  A warship can carry up to two land pieces, with the land piece not able to move prior to embarking on a warship or after it disembarks. If a warship is destroyed, any transported troops also perish. A warship ceases movement once it disembarks transported troops.
  3. Fight Battles - The Attacker gets to decide the order by which attacks occur and the defender gets no option in this decision.  The exception to this is that all sea battles must occur prior to land battles. Troops attacking an enemy territory when they disembark remain in the vessel for the purposes of these battles prior to them doing their sea landings battle.  The Steps in battle are as follows;
    1. Roll attack dice - Each piece rolls a different number of attack dice, outlined on their piece description.  You score a hit if you roll a six or higher with an attack dice.
    2. Taking damage - When a hit has been rolled, the defender decides which of their units take that hit, however a single unit cannot take multiple hits, with a new piece having to take the second hit.
    3. First strike - Some units have a first strike ability, which allows them to roll there dice both as an attacker and a defender prior to any other units and hits are taken by opponents prior to them being able to strike back.  All wizards have this ability, but also other units due to the presence of event card effects.  If both parties have first strike units, then this is done simultaneously.
    4. Durable - A dragon has a durable ability which means that it can take the strike from a hit without being destroyed.  If it fails to take sufficient hit within a combat turn to kill it, it will recover completely at the end of the turn.
    5. Castles - When a castle takes hit it isn't destroyed, rather it takes no more involvement in the battle.  After the end of the turn it is back to normal, however it may have been captured by the opponent if he now holds the game tile where it is located.
    6. Sea Battles - Heroes can fight in sea battles however all other pieces are merely cargo and cannot be involved.
    7. Dungeon Exploration - If a hero fighting a dungeon guardian opponent retreats, that dungeon guardian remains face up and is now known by all opponents.  Dungeon guardians are not considered pieces for the purposes of event card effects.  If a dungeon guardian rolls more than a single attack dice, it requires multiple hits to kill.  If a single hit is struck, it merely loses the ability to roll one of its attack dice.  However at the end of the turn if has not perished, it returns to full strength.  Some dungeon guardians require a roll of eight or above, instead of the usual six.  This requirements carries over to all dungeon guardians being fought in the one battle even if they do not state it on the card.  The one exception to this is the effects of an event card which trumps this attribute of the dungeon guardian.  If you are victorious in defeating all the dungeon guardians you then draw a treasure card which you can decide to use when you please.  When played treasure cards remain in play for the remainder of the game
    8. Press Attack or Retreat - One battle round always has to be played, however if units exist after this battle round, you have the option of continuing to battle or retreating.  All units must retreat together, and you are able to move to an adjacent friendly tile (not necessarily the one you came from), a friendly ship or for flying creatures a friendly sea tile.  In the event that the warship cannot carry all the retreating units, any that remain are destroyed.
    9. Conquer Spaces - If all the defending pieces are destroyed and atleast one attacking unit remains (if all attacking units are destroyed, the defender retains the space) then the attacker has conquered the space.  If the enemy has conquered your capital, you may be limited in the number of units you can place and you only receive half the gold you earn each turn.  A castle becomes yours if it captured, however you have to wait a turn before placing new units in it. This requirement to wait a turn does not apply for recaptured capitals.
    10. Run Amok - When a monster survives a battle that you are victorious in, it has the option of moving into any adjacent enemy controlled territories that have no troops within them.
  4. Reposition - You can not start a new battle within this stage, and consequently if there is no friendly space for your troop to move to, it is destroyed.  Heroes have to move away from the dungeon guardian entrance tiles in this phase to a friendly tile adjacent.  The Dungeon Guardian tokens are refreshed, so that there is now two present rather than the previous one.
